Geeky Goodness: How To Get Into Comics

Hooray! September 25th is National Comic Book Day, and guess what? That's today! Happy National Comic Book Day!

To be honest, I'm always surprised when someone tells me they've never read a comic. Not everyone grew up obsessed with Batman?! I always ask why and they usually say one of two things.

1) I don't like superheroes.
2) I don't know where to start.

Obviously I find it a little difficult to continue to be friends with someone who doesn't like superheroes, but that's another story. If capes, special powers and a ton of spandex isn't really your thing, there are tons of comics that aren't super related so that shouldn't be a reason to not pick one up.

Not knowing where to start? Yeah, I can understand that. It's hard to start a movie in the middle and pick up on a show mid-season, so it's hard to find where to start in a comic series or even know which one to choose.

Here are a few Non-Superhero comic/trade paperback recommendations to get you going:
  • Y: The Last Man
  • Love & Rockets
  • The Walking Dead
  • Strangers in Paradise
  • Blankets
  • Daytripper
  • The Unwritten
  • Locke & Key
  • The Sandman
  • Revival
  • Saga
  • Sweet Tooth
And if you do like superheroes, which you totally should, here are some of my faves:
  • Batman the Long Halloween
  • Runaways
  • George Perez's Wonder Woman
  • Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon
  • Scott Snyder's Batman (The new 52) - especially A Death in the Family
  • The Uncanny X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga
  • Astonishing X-men (by Joss Whedon)

I always get recommendations from friends, geeky peeps I follow on Twitter, and just by looking around at my local comic shop. I'm super excited to check out Sacrifice!

Here are a couple other faves:
  • Mind MGMT
  • Watchmen
  • Invincible
  • Powers
  • 100 Bullets
  • Bone
  • 30 Days of Night
  • Ex Machina
  • Fables
  • Concrete

Let me know what you decide to read or if you have any recommendations of your own.
